Pi - IRRATIONAL (LP by Psychopyjama) I came across the name Psychopyjama before and for some reason I forgot, I associated them with plunderphonica in the vein of People Like Us, Stock, Hausen & Walkman, but maybe I am wrong. This LP by this greek sign I don't have on my computer (I believe it means 'alpha' - err. help!) is made up with synths (maybe 95%), and musique concreteish sound processing. One side has rather short tracks which are pretty much to the point. The three longer cuts on the other side reminded me more of the non-keyboard electronics of Conrad Schnitzler. Quite nice stuff. The overall feel of this record is rather 80s when people released their music on self-produced labels in these sort of silk-screened jackets and small magazines like Vital (in case anybody remembers our old paper version) supported that. Nothing changed - we still like to support that! (FdW) Address: psychopyjama@hotmail.com www.staalplaat.com

This truly is electronic music. It's the sound of atoms and molecules, photons and quanta, organic but at a fundamental level. Duo Jon Drummond and John Encarnacao compose with analogues old and new, with a little help from our friend Audiomulch, the software synth of choice for the discerning bleep engineer. You can download a shareware version of it from http://www.audiomulch.com/ John 1 tells us he ventured all the way to the Czech Republic to get a vinyl pressing, and he hopes that the vinyl will be a drawcard itself. I can't help but agree, because this is esoteric music, so any extra audience will be welcome. It would be fantastic material for any chillout set, the throbbing spikiness of the sounds and the tenaciousness of the rhythms providing the perfect counterpoint to your pads and reverbs. In the living room chez Plastique I find it annoying getting up and turning it over all the time - I'd prefer to have it on full repeat in the CD player. Think Kazumichi Grime, think Size. This is definitely one for the ausemusic-ers out there. Connections: psychopyjama@hotmail.com

From: "Andrew Kettle (atmospheric disturbances)" Subject: Pi Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2000 22:23:30 +1000 You are a Butch of Bloody Brilliant Chaps! What was this parcel .... a record? .... F*ck, after all this time this is the second piece of black disc that has been sent ..... But, shot me with a harpoon giun! What an excellent piece of work! You guys/gals have a great release here..... WILL FLOG IT TO DEATH!!!!

p's debut album, pressed on vinyl in the Czech Republic, is irrational. two sides offer marked contrasts, one comprised of 10 short, sharp slaps, experiments that last from 9 seconds to 5 minutes that sometimes stray into lop-sided beats. the other side consists of slow, glacial movements - erratic and disturbing ambience.

one could compare
p to autechre or oval; but just as relevant points of departure might be the tape works of Stockhausen and Xenakis and the French musique concrete of the '40s and '50s.

p is Jon Drummond, an authority on computer music and 3D sound modelling and John Encarnacao, a self-confessed technophobe with an ear for inspired noise, as expressed on a previous psychopyjama release under the name St Crustacean - Fantastique.
