PH1 Digital video, Electroacoustic 9:57 November 2001 glimmer, speck, dot, aquatic, flap, rambling amplify, augment, vapour, systemic, distend, snag, daub
PH1 is a work exploring synthesised sound. The material for the opening phrase of the piece was originally created by drawing envelopes to describe pitch, amplitude and phase parameters for sinusoidal resynthesis. This was done using the graphic based synthesis tool Metasynth. This material was then further transformed by a number of processes including filtering, analysis and resynthesis and granular synthesis. This provided me with a pallet of sounds to use in the work (and reject!) derived from a common source. The large scale formal structures of the work are in part derived from processes of mapping small scale events - ie sound envelopes to large scale structures. The very low frequency rhythmic pulses at the end of the work are also created from transformations of the source material and not imposed as a separate structure or element. One of the inspirations for the piece was seeing the interplay of light on the glass panes of The Palm House in the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney, which was the venue where the work was to be first performed. PH1 also exists as a version with digital video, consisting of gradual video transformations of the textures found in the glass panes of the old Palm House structure. First Performance: The Palm House, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. 7.00pm Sunday 4th November 2001. |
