| Under the Covers Digital Video 8' 30" November 1995 Excerpt1 (0 '15" QuickTime 2.11mb 22Khz mono) Its a day in the life of......... story, a story abut a day, a day without a story, about an unconnected body in a dislocated environment, about clichés and trends, relationships with mobiles, feet looking for friends and chocolate marshmallows. Faced with the challenge of an off the shelf domestic video camera and basic video editing and processing tools I've tried to develop such a story. Collage, quotation and transformation techniques are used. Ideas from 'music concrete' tape pieces are applied to video images. I play with the relationships between sound and image. Connections are made - sometimes cliché, but often far removed from our expectations. The process of composition involved a loop of collecting visual and audio material, processing and editing, and then a 'live mix' which in turn lead to more collecting, processing and mixing....... The audio is played back on a separate DAT tape, linked in synchronisation to the video. This was basically a decision based on the poor quality of the audio available through the video format but also had the effect of enhancing the independence of the sound world in the piece. Through working on the audio in a separate format, I was free to create an independent commentary in sound to the video image. With thanks to everyone who donate feet, hands, time and other 'bits and pieces' to the production of this work and thanks to Fil Mackay for the use of his studio.
